Payment QR codes: should you scan or show your code?

Two ways to pay a shop—and one different code for transport.

Quick answer

If the shop displays a code, open Scan / 扫一扫 and scan it. If the cashier has a scanner, open your Payment Code / 付款码 and show it. A transit code / 乘车码 is for a supported transport service; it is not your shop payment code.

You scan the shop

  1. Open the scanner in your payment app. Scan the code at the intended counter.
  2. If asked, enter the amount from the bill. Check the recipient, amount and funding card before confirming.
  3. Wait for a completed transaction and ask the merchant to check receipt.

The cashier scans you

Open your payment code, not the receive-money code. Show it only to the cashier taking this payment.

If the transaction fails, check your payment record before trying again. Do not send a screenshot of your payment code to a stranger.

A different code for transport

A transit code usually needs its own city/service activation. Open the service for the city you are in and read its payment requirements.

In Guangzhou, supported contactless overseas Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards can use marked metro gates without a transit app. If neither route works, ask at the metro customer-service centre for a ticket.
