Baiyun Airport by Metro Line 3: choose the right train

Travel between Guangzhou and Baiyun Airport, know when to stay on at Tiyu Xilu, and choose current T2 or T3 access.

The airport is on Metro Line 3. Unfortunately, that does not mean every train marked ‘3’ will get you to your flight.

Two checks make the journey much easier: confirm your terminal with the airline, then read the destination on the actual train. Airport North / 机场北 serves Terminal 2. Terminal 3 needs a separate connection. On the correct through train, there is no need to change at Tiyu Xilu just because the line branches there.

Airport routes: Metro Airport North serves T2; a separate free-bus connection from Gaozeng serves T3.
Original simplified route guide. T3 requires another connection; this is not an official map.

Flying from Baiyun Airport? Check your terminal first

Terminal 1 closed for redevelopment on May 7, 2026. Metro Airport South / 机场南 and the separate intercity Baiyun Airport South station stopped handling passengers at the same time; trains pass through without stopping. Do not follow an old T1 airport route.

Airport North / 机场北 directly serves T2 on Metro Line 3. T3 has no direct Metro Line 3 stop. A metro journey to T3 needs an onward connection, while Guangzhou East Ring intercity reaches Baiyun Airport East / 白云机场东 at T3. Check the terminal with your airline before choosing between them.

City to airport: read the destination

From Zhujiang New Town / 珠江新城, Canton Tower / 广州塔 or the southern corridor, board a train displaying Airport North / 机场北. That through train continues across Tiyu Xilu onto the airport branch; you do not need to change simply because it stops there. Why Guangzhou Metro Line 3 is confusing

A train displaying Tianhe Coach Terminal / 天河客运站 takes the other branch after Tiyu Xilu. If you have boarded it from the south, leave at Tiyu Xilu and follow the Airport North signs. From Shipaiqiao, Gangding or another station on the Tianhe branch, a change at Tiyu Xilu is part of the airport journey.

Airport to city: stay on or change?

At T2, follow Metro Line 3 signs to Airport North and read the departure display. A Haibang / 海傍 train continues south through Tiyu Xilu, so you can stay on for Zhujiang New Town, Canton Tower and stations it serves farther south. A short-turn train may end earlier, such as Dashi / 大石; it will not take you beyond its displayed destination.

If the train ends at Tiyu Xilu / 体育西路, you must leave there. For the centre-track arrival where both sides open, face the direction in which the train arrived: the right side leads towards the southern corridor, and the left towards Tianhe Coach Terminal. The station guide explains that particular transfer. Tiyu Xilu station transfer guide

For Shipaiqiao / 石牌桥, Gangding / 岗顶 or Tianhe Coach Terminal, change at Tiyu Xilu even if your airport train continues south. A through train does not use the same centre-track door shortcut; follow the signed internal transfer route.

T3: add the connection to your plan

The free Airport Bus 2 T3 branch links Gaozeng with T3’s East Passenger Station. The boarding block below gives the new Exit A connection, directional hours and normal frequency. Its roughly 15-minute ride excludes waiting, the walk from the metro and the walk inside the terminal.

Alternatively, use a separate intercity train from a suitable interchange to Baiyun Airport East, or ask about a current T2–T3 terminal shuttle. These are different services; do not assume a Metro Line 3 ticket or remaining on the train takes you into T3. Check current intercity departures or the shuttle bay with staff.

The airport feeder received a new boarding area at the start of October. Follow the current Exit A and T3 East Passenger Station signs rather than an old photo. Holiday-only extra late buses are not a regular timetable. Confirm the last connection for the day you travel.

Four journeys to keep straight

JourneyTrain and Tiyu Xilu decisionCommon mistake
Zhujiang New Town → T2Airport North train; stay on at Tiyu Xilu.Taking a Tianhe Coach Terminal train.
Canton Tower → T2Airport North train; stay on at Tiyu Xilu.Changing unnecessarily from a correct through train.
T2 → Zhujiang New TownA southbound through train serving your stop: stay on. Tiyu Xilu terminator: change.Assuming every airport train continues south.
T2 → Shipaiqiao / Gangding / Tianhe Coach TerminalChange at Tiyu Xilu for the Tianhe branch.Staying on a train that continues towards Haibang.

If the train or connection is wrong

Read the next station and destination before continuing. For a short service on the right corridor, leave when instructed and wait for a train that serves your destination. If the train has taken the wrong branch, get off and ask staff for the correct return/transfer route; waiting on that branch will not create an airport service.

Before an early flight or late arrival, check the last usable connection from your actual starting station. A last departure at the line’s terminus does not guarantee the whole journey remains possible. Keep the Chinese terminal, flight number and a taxi or hotel-transfer fallback available offline.
